Here is everything you need to know about finding your wedding dress in Kitchener Waterloo!
Hey I am Cierra! A wedding photographer based in Cambridge, Ontario. But I am also a friend, a bridesmaids and a family member to SO many people this year. Seriously, I have been in the bridal boutique shops more than I care to admit this past year. It has been such an exciting time for all of my favourite people. But it has also been such a stressful time for them. One core value of my business is to make it a stress free experience! I interviewed my friends and family members, as well as chatted with so many bridal boutiques. I am here to share everything you need to know before going wedding dress shopping in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario!
Recommended Bridal Boutiques in the Region!
Bridal Boutique of Cambridge – all the featured images in this blog are taken from when I did the Bridal Boutique of Cambridge’s branding photos back in 2025! The girls there are all knowledgeable and beyond kind. Plus I swear they always have the trendiest items in store. Most of my photography clients get their dresses from this store! I first-handed, saw the experience brides get last winter. My best friend was gown shopping and the experience was amazing. So kind and fun!
Kiki McDonald Bridal – Kiki (the owner) is the sweetest soul I have yet to meet! Her and I crossed paths at many bridal shows over the years. As well as Kiki participated in my Mocha Mousse editorial in March of 2025! When I went into the shop to pick up the gown. Not only had she hand picked so many options exactly what I was looking for. But she also took the time to share about each dress. Kiki was so kind and knew dresses like the back of her hand!
Tips for Finding THE ONE!!!
Go out to lunch with your closest family or bridesmaids to celebrate! Plan this lunch nearby and a few hours prior to your appointments. You do not want hangry bridesmaids. Or worse, you do not want to be hangry.
Have a clear vision – before even looking. Set a clear budget and a wants / needs list. For example, do you need your dress to have straps or built in cups? Having a clear idea of your budget and needs, will help narrow down your selection. Helping to avoid decision fatigue!!!
Make a Pinterest board! Creating a Pinterest board or a collage helps so much! It will narrow down the aesthetic and kinds of gowns you naturally gravitate towards.
Assign one person to be your day of photographer!!!! When helping my friends and family dress shop, I took on this role hehe. I mean…I am a wedding photographer afterall. Butttt..what this helped with was avoiding trying the same dress on a million times. It is natural, you will forget the exact details of some dresses you try on. Having pictures from all angles helps when it comes to the deciding game.
Take a day to think about it! The best thing my best friend did when trying on her gowns was she made two appointments at one store a few days apart. In her first appointment she tried on all the gowns to find the one. The second appointment she only tried on THE ONE. This allowed her to make sure that she was making the right decision. It also helped when it came to sticking to her gut, vision and budget. Making impulse decisions is how you can go over budget really quickly!
My final tip when it comes to dress shopping is being extremely clear about alterations and pickup times! If you are making an entirely new dress out of a dress, you have to factor in your alterations costs as well as all the time it will take to make it new. Asking all the right questions with each dress is important. If you think you found the one but have some hefty alterations, get real with your stylist asking questions like. “How much would xy and z cost”? Or “What are your alteration turn around times for something like this”? This allows you to set your expectations right from the beginning. Rather than ending up disappointed because the dress would not be ready in time.
I hope this little blog post helped you out! I was so excited to have the opportunity to chat with brides and gown shops first hand. All the information they shared with me is what compiled this blog post. Good luck and happy shopping!!
